How to Use Sumo Suits to Super Size Your Next Corporate Event

Have your staff been working hard to hit targets or KPIs? Perhaps sales are down, and your staff need a boost. Do you have a conference coming up and believe that it can’t all be about work? No matter what’s going on, let’s super size your next corporate function.

In this post I’ll present two amazing ideas to super size any session or corporate function. Ever thought about super awesome Sumo Suits or what about murder mystery games?

1) Sumo Suits

The most fun you can have with a suit on. Your guests wear an extremely comfortable Sumo Suit. In true Japanese rikishi style, your colleagues will battle it out in the Sumo tradition. The Sumo Suit adds an awesome element to any function. The suits allow guests of all ages, sizes and fitness levels to participate and have safe fun!

Break time – Is a conference or training day on the way? When concentrating for hours indoors, the CO2 builds up, participants get drowsy, and the heart doesn’t get enough blood to the brain. If you need to develop your next marketing strategy, or plan the push into Asia, then you need your staff thinking straight and ready for action. Break up the day with a round of Sumo wrestling. Lots of research supports the idea that extra oxygen is required to fuel creativity. Sumo wrestling will get your staff moving and the blood flowing. You can play it outside where there is extra oxygen, and your guests that aren’t wrestling will be laughing.  This draws in huge amounts of O2 into the body.

Heaps of fun – Ever heard of bulldust bingo? Games like these are often invented because training days can be very boring. I know there are times when you just have to talk about the new corporate vision. Well, talk and then energise and have some fun with Sumo Suits.

Very safe – The padded suits and helmets mean that there is no chance for injury.  The suit breaks any fall and absorbs all the energy. The suit takes away all the risk but leaves all the fun behind.

Get some exercise – Once staff sit down at a conference it can be hard to get them up again. You won’t have to ask twice with Sumo Suits. They are naturally motivating, and your staff will be chomping at the bit to give it a go.

Something different – Do you hear grumbles from staff that training days are a drag? I am confident that your staff have not tried Sum wrestling before. Positive feedback from the staff could mean a promotion for you! I think we get a 10% commission on any Sumo related promotions.

All fitness levels – Your staff can choose how they want to get involved. The bouts are short and staff can have 1 go or 10. Other staff will talk, engage, laugh and the positive impact of Sumo Suits is huge.

2) Murder Mystery Games

Sumo Suits are a great way to break up your event. If you want to super size your event with something that goes for round 2.5 hours then murder mystery games would be the go.

We think you should do both. Energise your staff with Sum Suits during the day and then hold a murder mystery game at night.

Lots of fun – A murder mystery can really break the ice and bring your staff out of their shell. Laughter, finger pointing, sleuthing and detective work are a lot of fun.

Develop teamwork – The game puts your guests into small groups. Your guests have to work together to solve the crime. Better teamwork leads to better sleuthing.

Ice breaker – Sometimes staff can get a little cliquey. This can stop departments from cooperating as well as they should. A murder mystery game gets staff to mingle, trade clues and work together.

Improved communication – There is some public speaking involved, but only if guests want to. Staff talk, negotiate, sleuth and present their findings.

Conclusion

Don’t just run the same old training day next time. Super charge your event with Fatboy Slam Sumo Suits and a murder mystery game.

Sumo Suits For Different Ages

We are often asked “What size sumo suits will I need to hire for our age group?”

Here is a quick run down of what you need to know:

– From 0-4 years we recommend trying something other than sumo suits.

– From 5-12 years we recommend our child size sumo suits.

– From 12 years up to the big burley blokes we recommend our adult size sumo suits. For sure, 12 year olds will find the sumo suits much bigger than giant men, but the whole idea of sumo suits is that they are big anyway!

– We choose only to hire out JUMBO size sumos, whether they be the kids or adults design. Some companies have adult size sumos that are a medium size, as well as Jumbo… But out experience is that everyone wants Jumbo size, so that’s all we have!

– If you have a large number of both children and adults attending your event, as us to do you a special deal so that you can hire both sizes.

– If you are having mainly adults, then with a little help from the ‘grown ups’ the kids will be able to have a turn in the sumo suits. Similarly, if you are having mainly kids at the event then most adults can squeeze the kids sumo suits on to have a quick turn themselves… as long as they take it easy!

Ideas and Formats for Sumo Matches

When it comes to sumo suit hire everyone gets the general idea… Two people dress up in the padded sumo suits and wrestle each other.

But… how should you run some kind of tournament or competition?

To start with, we recommend that when two people put on the sumos suits, those two people play the ‘best of three’ rounds to decide on the winner. Sometimes just one round is over too quickly, so three works well.

We recommend three types of tournaments:

1) KNOCK OUT: Create a basic sheet for people to add the name of themselves and the person they will wrestle. The winner of the two people will advance to the next round, but the person that looses is ‘knocked out.’ Keep following this format until you can have a grand final with the the last two sumo wrestlers remaining.

2) CHALLENGE THE CHAMP: Any two people can put the sumo suits on first and wrestle in order to establish the first ‘champ.’ This person stays for the next round to face a new challenger. The winner of every challenge always remains as the champ.

3) ROUND ROBIN: This format does take the most organizing and the most preparation. It will require you to establish in advance who is going to compete, and the creating a fixture for people to wrestle other competitors and gain points for any rounds that they win. This works well if you have a small number of people but want the tournament to last a lengthy period.

Sumo Suit Wrestling Safety Tips

In our experience, sumo suit hire is very safe… in fact, in a previous blog post we made the case that it’s safer than a game of soccer or jumping on a bouncy castle!

However, to maximize safety you should observe the following requirements (and advise you guests of these too)….

1. Setup the sumo suits away from windows and poles

2. Setup the sumo suits away from swimming pools and deep water

3. Only wrestle on the padded mats

4. Pair participants against opponents or same gender and body size

5. Refrain from boxing or head and neck contact… sumo wrestling is about body bumping and body grabbing, not about delivering ‘blows’

6. Ensure that only the two people wearing the sumo suits are the ones wrestling

7. Ensure that no glass wear or other items as brought onto the wrestling area

8. Only wear the sumo suits on the playing area

A Great Alternative to a Jumping Castle

This week I watched as a neighbor had a jumping castle on their front lawn for a birthday celebration.

Sure, it looked like they were having fun, but watching them reminded me of the significant benefits of sumo suits instead of both child and adult jumping castles.

Firstly, the few people on the jumping castle at any one time seemed to enjoy themselves, but people who were lined up waiting were totally bored! Let’s face it, it’s fun to be on, but not really to watch! Sumo suits, on the other hand, are hilarious to be in yourself, and to watch. They end up entertaining a large group of people for hours, regardless of whether or not you’re the one wrestling.

Secondary, as the day got hotter I watched as people decided against going on the jumping castle. I assume that the plastic became way too hot to stand on. If only they had sumo suits, they could have dragged everything under the patio and kept going!!

So, if you were planning on a child or adult jumping castle, why not considering sumo suit hire instead?

Sumo Suits- Perfect Idea for Winter Parties!

If you are organsing a party or event in winter then sumo suits are pretty much the best option for an amusement or activity!

The rain might fall, the night could be cold, but sumo wrestling can still make your event a huge success!

Here’s four reasons why:

– Sumo suits can be setup inside if it rains. Unlike other amusements they are more compact so can easily fit into a games room, double garage or under a patio. You can also start with them outside if you prefer, and easily drag them undercover yourselves if it starts to rain.

– No electric motor required. Most inflatable amusements have an electric motor to keep it inflated… so even if it sprinkles with rain it can be dangerous. Sumo suits are pre-padded with foam so no motor is required. If it sprinkles with rain, everyone is still safe!

– It get’s hot inside sumo suits! It’s really fun, but can be hot! This makes winter the perfect opportunity to have sumo suits as a feature for your party.

– Cheap prices! Less people hold parties over winter so we reward those who do by offering great discounts on our sumo hire packages. We would rather that all our hire stock is out providing entertainment at parties than staying in storage over winter!

How Safe is Sumo Suit Wrestling?

Sometimes when people phone us I can tell by the hesitancy in their voice that they are reluctant to hire sumo suits, fearing that it might be asking for injury.

As with any activity (including walking down the street) there is always a risk… But let me put the record straight and your mind at ease.

Sumo suit hire is actually very safe. Think about it… how much padding do people wear when they play rugby, hockey, soccer or most other sports??? NONE!!!

How much padding do people where when they wrestle in sumo suits??? 12kg of foam surrounding every part of their body.. HEAPS!

Our opinion is that it’s even safer than a jumping castle, where head clashes, body clashes and awkward landings are common, all without wearing any padding. Yet, most people hop onto a jumping castle without thinking twice… so in comparison there’s little need to be over cautious about sumo suit hire.

In fact, the only injuries we hear about with sumo suit hire are when multiple people pile on top of one fallen sumo wrestler…. so as long as only the two people in sumo suits are wrestling, our experience is that you’ll be safer than on a sports field.

PLUS… for added peace of mind, Fatboy Slam has public liability insurance, not that we’ve ever had to call on it.

Cheap Sumo Suit Hire… What’s The Catch?

When people contact us they often point out that we are the cheapest priced sumo hire that they have come across… some people even ask “What’s the catch?”

To be 100 per cent clear… there is no catch! So how do we manage to hire out the GUARANTEED best product at the best price?

It’s simple… we are one of the few companies that focuses solely on sumo suit hire… no jumping castles, no mechanical bulls… we are the sumo suit hire specialists. This means that we are always importing tonnes of new stock to hire out. Because we purchase so many sumo suits, our manufacturer gives us a great deal, so we can PASS ON THE GREAT DEAL to our hire customers.

There are smaller sumo companies and even hire companies that spread themselves thin across many products. None of these can access the prices that we get, so they have to hire out their sumo suits at a higher price.

And…

In case you think we are some corporate juggernaught that is cashing in on dominating a market… That’s not the case. We are a network of three family run businesses in Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth… and we simply strive to give the best service and the best product to our communities.

Vehicles for Collecting Sumo Suits

One of the best things about hiring sumo suits is that whilst they are BIG FUN, they are small enough to collect yourself and save you money!

We often have people ask “What kind of vehicle do I need when collecting my sumo suit booking?”

The GOOD NEWS is that you DO NOT need a van or trailer.

A standard family car is fine, and a hatchback works too!! The MAIN THING is that you arrive with the car boot space and the back seat space totally clear. The floor mats take up just as much space as the sumo suits do.

Our biggest tip… don’t bring 3 friends with you and don’t collect the sumo suits on the same trip as the cans of drink and the hamburger buns!! The sumo suit gear will fit in the car fine, but it will need all the space.

Hire with Fatboy Slam… And By collecting and returning sumo suits yourself, you have the added benefit of having the sumo suits for an extended period. We let you pick up your sumos early enough so that you are not running around in the final hours before your function… and we let you return them late enough that you have time to rest and recover before bringing them back.

But, if you prefer to pay a bit extra and let us take care of the delivery and collection, we can do that too!

Selecting a Space to Set Up Sumo Suits

We often get asked “What kind of space do I need to set up sumo suits?”

In answering this there are a number of factors to consider:

1) DIMENSIONS: The sumo mats are usually 4m x 4m. At the very least you will need this much space. However, we recommend that you allow 6m x 6m to set up the sumo suits. This way, when the wrestlers roll off the side, they don’t go straight into your garden bed, window etc.

2) SURFACE: Setting up the sumos on a hard surface is totally fine, that’s the purpose of the floor mats. However, if grassed space is available it might be slightly better.

3) WEATHER: If bad weather is expected, then a double sized garage is the perfect size for the sumo suits. A covered patio or games room of similar size is also fine. Try and choose a place with minimal poles or windows nearby.

4) POOLS: Steer clear of setting up sumo suits inside pool areas. If someone wearing a sumo suit was to end up in the pool, the foam padding in the sumo would very quickly fill with water. The weight of the sumo would make it very hard for them to get out safely.

5) NUMBER OF SPECTATORS: Sumo suits will be the spectacle of your party or event. Don’t set them up in a corner out of the way, or it will only be fun for people when they are actually inside the sumos themselves. Ideally, You should them up so that there is space around all four sides for people to sit and watch… it will soon become the laughing point of the party!

Think through these five factors when deciding where to set up the sumo suits, and you’ll be set to go!!

Sumo Suit Rental or Buy?

When people look to hire outdoor heaters for parties they often end up discovering that it’s better value to buy than to rent. The same is often said for trestle tables.

This leads to a valid question… is sumo suit rental the best option? Should I look to buy sumo suits instead? If you then jump on to eBay you might see sumo suits for sale for as little as $50… but beware, these are inflatable sumos and are designed as a costume only. They are very thin (so that they inflate easily) but would pop instantly if you decided to try and wrestle in them.

You might also see a cheap set of sumo suits for sale for around $1000, even by sellers claiming that you could use these sumos to start a sumo suit rental business… BEWARE AGAIN! They might be good for your party and maybe even another party… but like anything, the cheaper they are, the more flimsy they are, and the less that they last.

Our sumo suit rental company has made this mistake before. Years ago we bought some of our stock from ebay sellers and were very disappointed… we didn’t even hire them out enough times to make our money back, before we had to throw them away. We now spend many thousands of dollars per set importing them on mass from the UK, where the best amusements in the world are made. They last longer for us, and it means that the people who come to us for sumo suit rental are getting a much better quality product.

In summary… sumo suit rental is much better than buying… and beware of the cheap stuff!
